I’m embarrassingly behind on documenting the past few months of clubs (all of which have been awesome and increasingly informed), so here goes:
Back in November, Jeremy & Julie properly introduced CPCC to the Dark ‘n’ Stormy® — conspicuous trademark and all. We learned about the history of the Gosling’s rum company’s introduction of the cocktail, and the fact that they’ll come after anyone who tries to serve the drink as they’ve trademarked it if they’re not using Gosling’s, according to this New York Times article by Jonathan Miles.
Which, in my mind, is a bit nuts. I totally comprehend the advantage of trademarking cocktails, but honestly Dark ‘n’ Stormys (or Dark & Stormys, or Dark and Stormys, etc) have been served with such prolific popularity these past few years all over the country (and elsewhere, I’m sure), is it really realistic to enforce using just one rather flat rum with the drink?
Whatever; Jeremy & Julie’s were delicious. We tried two different versions — one using the called for Gosling’s Ginger Beer and one using a homemade ginger beer Jeremy had been working on for weeks, which turned out quite well.
All of the details are documented in the presentation, downloadable here.
Meanwhile, here’s the trademarked recipe:
Dark ‘n’ Stormy® (the original Gosling’s recipe)
2 ounces of Gosling’s Black Seal Black Rum
4 ounces of Ginger Beer
Served in a highball glass over ice and garnished with lime.
